Plea bargain (also called charge bargaining)

A negotiation process between the Defence and Prosecution, before or during a criminal trial, to give opportunity:

– for the accused to plead guilty to a lesser charge; and

– for the Prosecution to secure a conviction and avoid the cost of a full trial.
